An inspiring HK made video to spread out the message about the fact that 51 % of global CO 2 Emission comes from the food industry, and by going veggie, we can be empowered and be part of the solution.

The following part comes from : http://interactioninstitute.org/blog/2009/08/19/health-social-change-and-the-food-movement/

I am personally very interested in having this message as driving force of the climate movement.  Because I see what food movement can do to add momentum and the moral force need for the climate movement and its implications for social transformation.

As I think about the type of social change that will truly make a difference, the change that keeps people like my friends and families physically healthy while also augmenting our collective experience of freedom, it seems to me that the food movement has a lot to offer:

Industrialized food and the commercialization of edible goods that have no benefit for our bodies is one of the key reasons why Americans are falling ill, poor communities and people of color bear the burden of this problem.  Building movement around food allows us to do a number of things:

  1. It exposes a dark side of capitalism – the conversation around industrialized food is directly connected to the question of disproportionate corporate power over our well being.
  2. It invites a conversation about the environment — Industrialized food is wasteful of energy and water resources.
  3. It invites us to build community – a sustainable response to industrialized food demands that we “go local”
  4. It allows us to become embodied – the conversation moves us away from a purely cognitive approach and invites us to consider our very bodies and very selves, it has the potential to shift movement away from abstraction.
  5. It invites personal responsibility – the conversation highlights the reality of structural oppression while also demanding that each one of us consider how we are individually part of this system with the most important decision we make – what we eat.

It is my belief that an inclusive food movement for exposing serious deficiencies in our current socio-political and economic arrangements while providing a powerful platform for imagining the world we want to build.

Mind-blowing statistic of the technological information age and the rapid speed of it - really meakes one questinon what it means - espeically for an education system like ours, or for ANY system (i.e. legal, political, religious, language, logic system?)

The ending is espeically funny.

P.S. If you loved the previous media communication video, you definitely will be even more impressed by this one.

Example of making 18 minute speeches without using “stop” and yet, works!

Saw a cool Chinese made Animation about Sex Power and Money  - in China
http://vimeo.com/3819308

Growing up in China, I feel very much able to identify with the main character.

But then i realised, it is not just China, it is the entire “globalisation” or “capitalist expansion”….a process i do not necessary see in negative light, but i do see how the world is going to a different direction now…and hope…

theoretic:

I’ve found the occurrence of full length Chinese animated films rare.
Eventually perhaps.
For now we have shorts - in shades of red and neon signs.

The figures with their rotating heads remind me of Kodamas from Princess Mononoke.

More on Less is More

I have commented on this before, but when i saw this article, again from my must-read potential partner - The Interactive Institute for Social Change. (http://interactioninstitute.org/blog/)

In his July 2005 Ted Talk, psychologist Barry Schwartz takes aim at a central tenet of western societies: freedom of choice and how choices yields:

1. Paralysis, not liberation.

2.  Dissatisfaction with the choice made (because the known options make it easier to regret the option you choose against ).

3. Dissatisfaction with even high quality results (because the heightened expectations that have been created make “pleasant surprises” less frequent and our perceived bar for success unduly high).

4. Depression and self-blame. When experiences don’t meet our expectations, we find a way to blame ourselves and that makes us feel bad.

Schwartz connects our obsession with more — more choices, more options, more things — as an outgrowth of an affluent society.  I would add that these are outgrowths of a consumerist society…and yes, plain ol’ greed that underlies our capitalist value system. (See The Story of Stuff for more on this).

———

Instead of more choice leading us toward freedom, it actually enslaves us.  Instead of so much more being better, some more and even less, may indeed be best.

Question

What does this call up and out in you? If this tenant is at the basis of economics (“opportunity cost”) How does this link to the cause of climate change?

I remember my best friend who is also a law students complain how boring her studies are (she is not alone in this), but she keeps telling herself and me that it leads to “more choices” in the future.

My question is, future becomes past the moment it comes to present.  If that’s the case, won’t you never be completely satisfied? Because you always want more (choices) and there always are more (choices) in the future…

A photo slideshow to thank all those who had brought us to today -

Here i also attach an email to our alumni:

Dear all fellow  “元老“ of HKCCC (now known as Climate Chance):

Sandy, Chito, Fung, Gerald, Corrine, Andy, Cyn, Ivy, Lois, Marina, Jack, Fedrick, Alex, Amy, Simone, Creamy, Pinky, Creamy, Toby, Pel, Ivy, Gloria, Vivian, Marina, Louis, Pinky, Mart, ….

How are you? Miss you all!

As you guys already known, HKCCC has been through some structural changes and it is now a Network with a Macau branch.       We are also a party to youth constituency recognised by UNFCCC secretary with right to intervene and to speak at the planery session!  (for more, see our website http://thenetworkforchange.org)     We have just finished organising the 350 Rally on October 24th International Day of Climate Action as part of the 5000 actions taking place in 181 countries.    Our current network coordinator - Jessica Yuan, along with some of our members are also part of the Green Advocates of HKU (or Chinese Youth COP 15 Delegation subjected to some sponsorship issues) going to Copenhagen this December.   We are interested in what are some of the advices you have for them, messages you wish they will deliver for you.

As I was reflecting on the life-changing journey we embarked on together since I first joined HKCCC (see a little video/photoslide i made - Memories), I couldn’t help but to think - how important it is — in a world seeks to “consume” materials and information as “efficiently” as possible — to take the time to build trust with us (as advocates of a social cause) and our audience. And that trust translates to a sense of continuity, which is inherent within the building of a community, such as this network.      I can say that both Jessica and I believe that no matter where we will be physically or what we are doing with our lives in the future , we will always devote part of our lives to this network, to support new members, to weave our stories into it…

Continue to actively support us!
Here I really wish that you all can join our online huddle workspace where you can keep in touch with all the members and what is going on. (Invitation will be sent shortly).
Secondly, you can keep yourself updated by joining this group to receive  our monthly E-Newsletter.

Moreover, under the current network structure, you are by default our “Strategic Partner” which means you can involve yourself in the decision-making process regarding anything to do with the network.

If you cannot join any of our physical meetings, you can always post your views on to our blog/network design sketchbook), Facebook Google Calendar before (post your comments on  facebook event page or create new post on our blog or after the meeting (in form of minutes/reflections). You can also contribute by posting on our blog any ideas you have which you would like our members to carry out or investigate in.  (to post on our blog - go to www.tumblr.com login as climatechance@thenetworkforchange.org password: not reproduced here)

If you have time, be great you can publish your profile on our blog which is linked to “TEAM” on our main website, following the instruction.  (Or i will copy-past the information already existing on hkccc.wordpress.com with your facebook photos)

Join the Lunch Buffet on Nov 15th Sunday, HK!

As we have 17 current members and about the same amount of new coming members, it will be great if you guys can come to this HUGE climate chance network  gathering where we can talk and share some ideas. Current green advocate will also be invited (by Jessica) Please confirm http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=167335044221&index=1

Thank you all, for being yourself, and your energy given to HKCCC, and now Climate Chance. I have learned much from you! And hopefully we can carry the movement foreward!
yours,
in joy,

Serena

The Design of Experience: Fun

Check out this clip from The Fun Theory, an initiative of Volkswagen, that aims to show that fun is one of the best ways to change behavior for the better.

It times beautifully with a lot of thinking, writing, and experimenting we’ve been been trying to do here at Climate Chance about/with the power of design, and specifically the design of experiences that can change behavior and bring out the best in individuals and groups.

Brilliantly illustrating philosophies of economic theory. He also emphasizes its contradiction with reality of flexibility- which something what we (Climate Chance) have been working on (with system thinkers like Peter Senge, Roger Burton):

- if you assume someone to be bad, then it becomes bad… if you assume one to be selfish, we act accordingly and create realities in which the “object” becomes bad…

- the concept of feedback loop (continuous and circular influence) between the impact of participant’s statement or reflection which in turn, shapes how participants think.

Comment on the 5th Lecture which i attended yesterday:

1- HKU continues to stage Q & A with pre-prepared questions from selected students- an open society indeed~

2- Great overview of the financial crisis - the current “stability” being a delusion, the pattern of how we had reacted without questioning the fundamental assumptions of economics

3- However, great contradictions…in Amy’s word, he speaks like a life-long drug dealer or polluter  now advocating  anti-drug or environmental law.

He paints a very ugly picture for the future of the world - the fall of US and its International Capitalism based on Washington Consensus - prioritise preservation of countries placed at the centre (since WWII)  and continuous exploitation of peripheral countries ) and the rise of China and its State Capitalism (which breeds state rivalries, similar to what western imperialists and colonialists.

His solution is - US needs to be more far-sighted and learn to handle the reality of being a declining empire (economically and politically) while maintaining military supremacy. China needs to be “even more far-sighted” to be more open and to have rule of law.

One questions what is the basis of “law”?  Check out this interesting article on the Politics of International Law in European Journal of International Law.

My question is thus:

Given how Soros outlined the reinforcing and self-defeating feedback loops created by our the false premises on which our current finantial system is based on, how does the rule of law or the proposed imposition of internatinal finantial regulation regime help to to get us over the hurdle given the basis of our legal infrustraction - the assumption of neutrality and existence of objective reality?

Climate Chance in it!

Jessica

You shook your head with doubts and said it was scaremonger. Now, do you SEE it?

Nothing captures better than this - the manufacture of happiness, the partnership between TV and state and corporations - together, we live in a happy world.

Dauntingly serene and beautiful music
