Stephanie’s Quotes and comments

The draft crouchure looks very good! :)

It includes a diversity of perspectives and a convergence of ideas

I have my own supplements :)

I have two ideas:

(1) I may want to say something about my opinion on the “bridge theory” that I published on tumblr the night before 350 rally. Which is about whether we want personal change in behaviour or a government level top down change?

see: http://tumblr.com/xgc3nlsuf

(2) a simplier perspective in the very systematic and philosopical perspectives of yours. Perhaps I want to start with something smaller, more instrinsic, more genuine thinkings:

“Ever since I was small, there was this touching picture of human living on green land under a boundless blue sky clinging in my mind, full of hope, love and honesty. I began to observe that human had long forgotten the deepest yet simplest truth – we are part of the nature. We are not here to act for the sake of acting. We want to plant our dreams, like picking up the deepest picture in our hearts.”

Welcome any discussion :)

we always want to talk, communicate, connect and think about climate change instead of just shout.

This idea  is based on my point of view which is that:
- I see climate change as a symptom of an outward materialistic view of life where everything “external” can be valued and balanced, which as I discovered later, naturally causes pain and suffering, because no matter what I have or achieved now, things in the future or of others’ are always better.   The ego will always compare.  The journey of advocating for climate change had somehow led me to a point when I could feel and experience reality directly, as part of the interconnected whole, when every second becomes moment of eternal happiness.    In Chinese philosopher, Dao’s word, it is a state of oneness with heaven and man. (天人合一).   There is nothing wrong gaining pleasure from material objects, it is just limiting, and I believe in a possibility of collective evolution of human consciousness at this time in history.

Climate Chance Website Committee

Serena Thanks Jerry Cai Duo for his continuous hard work for the past month, we now have not just a website, but also a “Wikipedia” platform for us to work on it! There remain many issues to be solved and i really appreciate your patience. I wish to set up a Website Committee for ANYONE who is a volunteer in our network to join and participate in the website administration process - you can login and directly edit the content of the website, its structure and design etc. Join http://groups.google.com/group/climate-chance-website-committee and follow the instructions. As our 350 opening ceremony is on October 5th, and also some of us are going to the Asian Youth Climate Workshop in Bangkok on October 2nd. So hopefully we can get something settled before then. So I will need to know, for those who join the committee, your availability during the coming days, how we can set up a regular meeting etc. P.S. Anyone wishes to organize a surprise “party” for Jerry to express our thank to his work? He is so awe fully humble….and i do wish you guys can meet him…

I love the design and color.

I would recommend to use the design for the film-screening posters. In the upper block, write the most classic line in the movie, concise and though-provoking. In the lower block, use the official poster as the small profile picture on the left while on the right write the time and venue for the film-screening.

Kong U 350 - Flash Mob

Next Kong U 350: FRIDAY 25TH SEP!!

MEET AT THE MAIN LIBRARY (in front of entrance)

12:30PM - bring your club shirt if you have one!

It only takes about 30 mins so don’t worry if you have class at 1, you can leave earlier =)

Feedback of last Kong U 350

The first KONG U 350 was so fun and I had a great time!

I chose about 4 pictures out of the 30 something shots that we had. I’m going to send it to 350photography@gmail so that the committee members of 350 Snapshot can put them up on facebook and flickr.

I also want to make a poster to promote KongU350. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really want some other non Climate Chance people to come and join us at our last two KongU 350 next week at Happy garden and SU…

What is Kong U 350?

Basically, us Climate Chance-ers will meet between 12:30 - 2:00 at a reasonably famous location of Kong U and take a 350 Snapshot =D

How are we going to do it?

The first easy spot is the CYM Escalators. And the plan is to get some people on the CYM Escalators to hold up posters “3” “5” and “0” while the others take the snapshot and promote to those around them with information about deadline & submission emails & info about what 350 is. This event can gain a lot of attention from people all around campus, and it can also gain us one extra photo each time we do it.

Schedule of Kong U 350

1st one 22th

12:30 - 2:00 @ CYM Escalator

2nd one 25th

12:30 - 2:00 @ Library

3rd one 29th

12:30 - 2:00 @ Happy Garden (Outside Starbucks)

4th one 2nd oct

12:30 - 2:00 @ SU building (Ha King Wong)

350 Snaphot Class Announcement

TEMPLATE FOR EMAILING PROFESSORS BEFORE Class Annoucement
Dear (Professor’s name)

I am student in your (course name + course code), my name is (your name). I am representing Climate Chance, and would like to ask if you could give us 5 mins during this week or next week’s lecture to promote an event we have organized; 350 Snapshot Collage. In our promotion, we would like to introduce ourselves and show an exciting 4 min video explaining our event. Below are some information about Climate Chance and the event.

Climate Chance, formerly known as the HK Climate Change Coalition, with the support of CEDARS, is a network of change built by HKU students upon their delegation to United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Bali, 2007.

Our event is part of a larger global campaign organized by 350.org, to raise awareness about the science and importance of the number “350”. According to scientists, 350 ppm* (parts per million) is the safe upper limit of global Carbon dioxide emissions to keep our climate in the “safe” zone, avoiding a tipping point or drastic change in our climate. Currently, our world has around 389 ppm of CO2, raising by about 2ppm each year.

The 350 Snapshot Collage invites everyone to join the global campaign by taking fun, creative and memorable snapshots of themselves with the number “350” and sending it to 350photography@gmail.com by October 10th. All these photos will be collected and made into a collage and printed on a banner which will be displayed on campus on Global Action Day: October 24th.

We are trying our best to reach out, as far as we can, to the community. We would be very grateful if you could consider this request to grant us 5 mins of lecture time to promote the 350 Snapshot Collage.

I understand that there is a lot of information in this email, and thank you so much for reading through it all. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to our Committee member of the 350 Snapshot Collage:

BEFORE YOU PRESENT PASS AROUND LAMINATED POSTER OF THE EVENT

WHAT YOU NEED TO SAY BEFORE YOUR PRESENTATION
(along the lines of…)

“I’m (name), representing Climate Chance, and I would like to give a brief introduction about the club and why I am here today. Climate Chance is a student network that raises awareness and provokes dialogue of climate change. From now until 10th October, we are hosting an event known as the 350 Snapshot Collage as part of a global campaign to raise awareness about the number 350. . And I would like to share with you a video that explains this event.

SHOW YOUR VIDEO

AFTER THE VIDEO
“As you might have seen from the video, 350 is a very significant number. It represents the safe upper limit of global carbon dioxide emissions. We would like to invite each and everyone of you to take snapshots of yourselves with the number 350 and send it to us at 350photography@gmail.com. We will make it into a collage and put it up on campus as well as show it around Hong Kong on Oct 24. We will also take it to the United Nation Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen. Together, we want to show the world how beautiful and united a climate movement can be.

Climate Change - where are we now?

I came across a really cool video which shows a giraffe going through the five stages of grief on the Kubler Ross Grief Cycle after getting stuck in some quick sand and although there is perhaps not a direction correlation between the emotions that people feel towards what is going on with Climate Change and the grief cycle there certainly appear to be some similarities to me.

For instance, since climate change was discovered 30 years ago, we had about 10 years of “immobilisation” and Denial, then a lot of discussions with emission cut (Bargaining)…

During the past few months, from Antarctica to the discussions with Peter Senge and Roger Burton, I had a lot of “angry” state….and now, I believe i have come to acceptace, which is really cool - freed from fear…

If you don’t understand what i am talking about, call me!

Stand still if you have seen and understood the graph shown on the screen.
(If there is somebody standing up, I will ask him/her to explain the graph. If not, I will explain it to all)

Why am I here?
I don’t dare to say that I’m representing the whole group to give this talk. People join us for different reasons therefore they have different stories, so I can’t generalize. I’d rather to say, today I’m here, representing myself to share my story with you, which is part of the network’s story because we grow together.

It’s always fascinated me the idea of finishing your life and then being analyzed on it. It was in my second year of studying, I suddenly had a strong feeling that my life means more than the GPA I can gain, the promising future I can fight for. So I made a decision, to step out of the living cycle I get used to and go out to find out “what is more” to me.

So my story starts with going to Canada and volunteered for Greenpeace. It is my voluntary service that taught me this.
Video on Global Warming Simpsons
I hope you enjoy the video. It is a good reflection of the basic scientific and political facts of climate change.

Once I acknowledge and recognize it, the moral imperative to make big changes seems to me is inescapable.

So upon my return to Hong Kong, I participated in the Asian Youth Climate Summit, which gathered over 100 youth delegates from 23 countries all over the world. During the summit, we discussed about climate justice, carbon trade market and came up with a youth statement that later on served as a guideline for Asian youth to organize campaigns on campus. What I found out was more amazing is that the summit was organized by a group of young HKU students, just like me. They went to the United Nation Conference on Climate Change and got inspired. Upon their return, they established Hong Kong Climate Change Coalition, which is now known as Climate Chance. So I asked myself, “If they can do this, what can I do?” Then I become part of them and we organized campaigns together —

The great minds we’ve met and the great discussion we’ve participated constantly question us in the same way, what fundamentally caused climate change? Is climate change only an environmental issue? Well, we finally come to the answer “NO”. We see climate change as a symptom of a larger ill and unsustainable pattern of development our current social, economic and political structure is based on. The structure is based on extraction, manipulation and transportation of resources towards centralized locations. A mode of thinking of the industrial age, which is now over.

So that’s why we rename ourselves climate chance. We don’t see climate change as a threat but an opportunity — an opportunity for me to find out how I want to live with my life, an opportunity for us to proactively create the world we envision, an opportunity for you to find yourself part of something bigger.

Here is the chance. This year in December, world leaders will gather in Copenhagen to try to come up with a climate agreement. So this semester, on Oct 24, we are having a campaign, as part of the global youth movement to speak up and ensure us a just and sustainable world.
350 Global Action Day Video

We also have a series of campaigns that lead to the Global Action Day by collecting snapshots to spread out the message.
350 snapshot video

The video is made by our members. I feel grateful to have a bunch of like-minded friends supporting by my side and reminding me that I’m not fighting alone. By working with them, I start to feel the power of my existence through participating something bigger than me. I’m also grateful to stand here and speak to you because you all have made a choice to become doctors and nurses. You have already chosen to serve people, care about people and relieve their pain. So I thank you for this chance to talk to you because I think you are great.

Selected Scripts-

Where we are now - the transformed media landscape.

Not to put too fine a point on it, the moment we’re living through, the moment our historical generation is living through is the largest increase in expressive capability in human history.

Because this is really a transformation of the ecosystem as a whole. Not just a particular strategy. The classic media problem, from the twentieth century is how does an organization have a message that they want to get out to a group of people distributed at the edges of a network. And here is the twentieth century answer. Bundle up the message. Send the same message to everybody. National message. Targeted individuals. Relatively sparse number of producers. Very expensive to do. So there is not a lot of competition. This is how you reach people. All of that is over.

We are increasingly in a landscape where media is global. social, ubiquitous and cheap. Now most organizations that are trying to send messages to the outside world, to the distributed collection of the audience, are now used to this change. The audience can talk back. And that’s a little freaky. But you can get used to it after a while, as people do.

But that’s not the really crazy change that we’re living in the middle of. The really crazy change is here. It’s the fact that they are no longer disconnected from each other. The fact that former consumers are now producers. The fact that the audience can talk directly to one another. Because there is a lot more amateurs than professionals. And because the size of the network, the complexity of the network is actually the square of the number of participants. Meaning that the network, when it grows large, grows very very large.

As recently at last decade, Most of the media that was available for public consumptionwas produced by professionals. Those days are over, never to return. It is the green lines now, that are the source of the free content.

And the choice we face, I mean anybody who has a message they want to have heard anywhere in the world, isn’t whether or not that is the media environment we want to operate in. That’s the media environment we’ve got. The question we all face now is, “How can we make best use of this media? Even though it means changing the way we’ve always done it.”
